Hello Becky.

Your message definitely makes sense.

My understanding of these matters, combined with a bit of logic, tells me that you cannot apply for assistance to train someone until your business is actually in operation.

Until then, you will have no “concrete” reason for training anyone and, no mater how well-intentioned you are, the relevant authorities are very unlikely to accept an application for funding unless they can see that the business is actually in existence. They will expect you to be training someone to ADD to whatever you already have in place (i.e. to assist in the DEVELOPMENT of your business, not simply in the LAUNCH of it).

If that were not the case, anyone might apply for (and receive) assistance without actually following-through on the undertakings made in order to obtain it. The situation would be too complicated if the authorities had to keep track of what happened after the period of training.

You might be able to organise some sort of co-operation arrangement with someone like MARTIN who is developing an ECO-FRIENDLY SPORTS CAR, as per his postings in the “DESIGNED CAR….” thread. (The address of his own website can be found there.) He might have some useful information or suggestions for you. The following link will take you to that thread.

RECRUITING & TRAINING MECHANICS.

How do I go about putting someone through training to become a mechanic? Do I need to have established and set up my garage first before I can put someone through training? What happens if it's a "chicken & egg" situation? Do I set up the business first but will consequently have no mechanics until they are trained up, or can I put someone through training before setting up the garage? I hope this has made sense? I would very much appreciate your thoughts and advice.

STARTING AN M.O.T. TESTING-STATION

Hello Itai.

To start an M.O.T. testing-station, you would obviously need to be (or to have) a qualified mechanic and you would need to register with the authorities in order to become an official tester.

You would need suitable premises and the equipment necessary to carry out all the required tests.

The following website will provide you with all the necessary information.

Hi Karen
I have a large quantity of garage equipment surplus to requirements, it has been stored for over a year,
some, is very modern and has had, only about a years use, there is enough to set up a small garage and MOT station, orthough some additional equipment would be be needed to comply to the latest ministry requirements, about £ 20.000 at new prices, I am offering the lot for a bargain price of £3750, and will deliver free, limit two hundred miles, or will split, prices negotiable buyer collects, I am a retired garage owner, setting up a garage and mot station single handed, and ran it for twenty years so I have a wealth of knowledge to offer, to help them get set up
anybody interested call my email address for details

Hello again Karen.

Thank you for the reply.

If I find any more useful information, I will let you know. Don’t forget that these days THE BANKS are being encouraged to give business loans, without security, to those who have a good idea for starting a new business. You must only convince them that YOUR idea is a good one.

If you fail, you should try the government’s “Small Firms Loan Guarantee” scheme, through its SMALL BUSINESS SERVICE.

www.sbs.gov.uk (0114 2597308)

It is also available through the DTI.

www.dti.gov.uk/sflg (0845 001 0032/3)

If you do not yet have a name for the business, you will find some useful information in the “BUSINESS NAME REGISTRATION” thread, in my message dated March 5th. You will need to DISPLAY the name at the premises, and you must avoid choosing a name which is already taken and known to be in use by another business.

Best Wishes.

Hello again Karen.

You might find the following organisation helpful.

GARAGE EQUIPMENT ASSOCIATION LTD
2-3 Church Walk, Daventry, NN11 4BL
Telephone +44 (0)1327 312616, Fax +44 (0)1327 312606, E:Mail info@gea.co.uk

(I suggest you ask them where you might find USED ITEMS, auctions and equipment for hire or lease.)

On the subject of EQUIPMENT, I can offer the following ideas.

Someone has suggested to me that dealers in AUTO-PARTS AND ACCESSORIES will be good for some items, and discounts make them quite inexpensive.

MACHINE MART seems to give reasonable value for money.

www.machinemart.co.uk

ARGOS shops list a two-ton capacity trolley-jack for £20 in their catalogue. Their tools MIGHT be inexpensive. I am no expert in the prices of such equipment (but I could be by tomorrow). Do you have a good idea of how much the individual items should cost? Make sure that you MINIMISE your expenditure, provided that the QUALITY of the goods is acceptable.

Always check the ADVERTISEMENTS in your local press for bargains in the “FOR SALE” columns.

It cannot hurt you to contact the AA and ask them for some contact information. They pride themselves on knowing everything about ALL matters concerning vehicles.

Similarly, you can lose nothing by phoning all the existing garages and asking them if they have any old equipment which they would like to get rid of. There will definitely be something lying around unused somewhere. These days it is sometimes difficult for people to dispose of such bulky unwanted items. You might be able to “do someone a favour” and you might, therefore, get something free of charge (or at a very good price).

These are a few more addresses which might help you with FUNDING.

http://europa.eu.int/grants/index_en.htm (European Union FUNDING)
http://europa.eu.int/index_en.htm (European Union GENERAL INFORMATION)
http://europa.eu.int/en/comm./dg23/guide_en/index2.htm

http://www.wefo.wales.gov.uk (WEFO) WELSH EUROPEAN FUNDING OFFICE

The following organisation MIGHT be able to help you with anything at all.

bawe.uk@btconnect.com (BRITISH ASSOCIATION OF WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS)

Did you find the list in the “BUSINESS START-UP AND DEVELOPMENT” thread (Nov. 29th)?

The “j4b” organisation offers a regular NEWSLETTER on FUNDING. You can subscribe to it at their website.

www.j4b.co.uk

The SMALL BUSINESS SERVICE (SBS) is provided by the government. You might be able to obtain some useful information from them on FUNDING and SOURCES of equipment.

www.sbs.gov.uk/financegap

If all else fails, you can try asking any of THE BANKS for a business-loan. You should enquire about the “Small Business Loan Guarantee” scheme. (These days the government is encouraging them to lend to small businesses.) There is no harm in asking.

Best Wishes.

Hello again Karen.

Today I can offer you the following information.

The E-BAY auction website is always worth trying.

Have you advertised in your local press in the “ITEMS WANTED” column?

The YELLOW PAGES has categories for GARAGE EQUIPMENT, GARAGE SERVICES, HIRE SERVICES (Tools and Equipment) and PLANT AND MACHINERY HIRE.

You cannot lose anything by contacting established garages and asking if they have any unwanted items.

I will try to find more sources for you during the next few days.

Best Wishes.

Hello Karen.

Please excuse the brevity of this message. I will add more if you can give us an idea of the location of your business. (There will be some suppliers of equipment listed in DIRECTORIES such as the YELLOW PAGES.)

For now, I think that you might find some useful information in my reply to one of the messages which we received some time ago in the “I WANT TO START MY OWN BUSINESS….” thread. Please take a look at the messages which I posted in that thread on April 30th, in reply to DEAN. This covered the question of FUNDING and PREMISES.

I will add more information on that subject as soon as I can find any.

Do you know all about the “paperwork” necessary for starting a business? If not, you will find some useful information in my reply to JIMMY (June 3rd-4th) in the “I WANT TO START MY OWN BUSINESS….” thread.

Please let us know where your business is located (approximately, if you so wish).

Best Wishes.

Could anybody help with grants or other ways of getting money to start up a garage for a trained mechanic? We have found premises to rent but would need help with ways of renting.purchasing ramps and equipment. Any other help on start up would be much appreciated.
