Control of Noise at Work Regulations for Music & Entertainment

The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 (Noise Regulations) have now come into force for the music & entertainment sectors, applying to pubs & clubs, amplified live music events, orchestras and other premises where live or recorded music is played.

170,000 people in the UK suffer deafness, tinnitus or other ear conditions as a result of exposure to excessive noise at work.

CHANGES

-  employers must now ensure protection is worn and where necessary signpost hearing protection zones at 85 decibels daily or weekly average exposure

-  employers must assess the risk to workers' health and provide information and training should they wish to use protection at 80 decibels

-  there is now an exposure limit value of 87 decibels that workers must not be exposed to, taking into account reduction from hearing protection
